Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
